Obituary

Alan Lee Hornbacher, 73, Drake, passed away Saturday, October 20, 2018 at his home in Drake. A private family graveside service will be held at Sunnyside Cemetery in Harvey. Arrangements are with Bethke-Nelson Funeral Home of Drake.

Alan Lee Hornbacher, son of Robert and Helen (Sprenger) Hornbacher, was born December 27, 1944 at Harvey. He grew up in the Anamoose area and graduated from Anamoose High School in 1962. Alan entered the United States Marine Corp in 1965 and served his country during the Vietnam War. While in Vietnam he was involved in the building of a number of structures including several schools. He received a Meritorious Mast for outstanding service to the people of Vietnam and his fellow Marines.

Following his honorable discharge in 1967, he returned to the Anamoose area and began farming. In addition to farming, he attended classes at Minot State College for two years. In 1972 he moved to Hope, ND where he farmed and ranched. While living in the Hope area, Alan enrolled at the Western College of Auctioneers in Billings, MT and received his auctioneers license in 1975. In 1978 he moved to Minot and purchased the Minot Livestock Auction which he operated until 1990. From 1992 to 2002, Alan co-managed the Lake Region Livestock Auction in Devils Lake. Alan returned to the Anamoose area in 2002 and, for a number of years, worked for auctioneers throughout North Dakota, assisting with farm, antique and household sales.

Alan was a life member of the Hope American Legion Post and the Oswald-Wohl V.F.W. Post #6831 of Anamoose.

He is survived by 2 sisters, Rose Gueldner and Kathleen Hornbacher both of Fargo; 1 brother, James (Doris) Hornbacher of Hartland, WI; and several nieces and nephews.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Marvin and a sister, Carol Ghanam.
