Obituary

Alfred Martin, 97, Balfour, North Dakota passed away Monday, September 5, 2022 at St. Aloisius Nursing Home, Harvey, North Dakota.  Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 10, 2022 at the United Community Baptist Church, Anamoose, North Dakota.  Pastor Kenneth Schneider will officiate and burial will be in the Drake City Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 9, 2022 at Nelson Funeral Home, Drake, North Dakota and one hour prior to services at the church.  Arrangements Nelson Funeral Home, Drake, North Dakota.

Alfred Martin was born August 8, 1925 to John and Sophia Martin in Strassburg Township in Sheridan County six miles southwest of Kief, ND. He attended grade school in Strassburg Township and high school in Drake, graduating in 1943. He worked on the family farm until 1950 when he entered the U.S. Army, serving in Germany with the occupation 4 th Infantry Division Fordes near Frankfurt, Germany. After his honorable discharge in 1952 Alfred returned to the family farm working with his brothers. In 1959 he moved to a farm three miles east of Balfour, retiring from farming in 1997. He then worked for his nephew, David Martin. He married Jeanette Hirschkorn Faul on May 29, 1983.

Alfred was a member of the Balfour School Board for twelve years, land township assessor for thirty-five plus years, Drake Rural Fire Protection District when it organized, past member of the Board of Directors of the Drake Farmers Elevator Company, member of the Drake American Legion Post #32, member of the Gideons International, member of Camp Bentley Board of Directors, and served in various capacities at the Drake Baptist Church until the church merged to form the United Community Baptist Church of Anamoose. After retirement the Martins traveled to visit family and see many sites.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Jeanette, Harvey, ND; sons Neal (Chris), Bemidji, MN; Jay (Jen), Stewartville, MN; grandsons Cole Martin and Connor Martin from a previous marriage; great grandchildren Wesley, Beau, Paige and Kiera Adams, Ileona and Grayson Bengrud, and Ryker and Emmerson Weber; Jeanette's children, Lynelle (Mark) Markovic, Cindy (Tom) Leier, Mark Faul, Brenda (Gary) Marceau, and Terri (Chad) Rovig, grandchildren Curtis Markovic, Chelsey (Dave) Adams, Maika (Andy) Bergrud, Breann (Matt) Weber, Kyndra Leier, Connor, Kjersti, and Cayden Rovig.

He was preceded in death by his father John, mother Sophia, brothers Albert, Edwin, Bennie, Johnathan, sister Freda Rauser, brother in infancy, David, sisters-in-law Margaret and Sally Martin, and step-grandchildren Katlen and Kellie Rovig.
