Alfred E Sherlock's Obituary
Alfred E. Sherlock, 65, of rural Drake, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, April 8, 2017. His funeral will be held Thursday, April 13 at 2:00 P. M. at the United Methodist Church in Drake. Visitation will be held Wednesday, from 3:00 P. M. Until 6:00 P. M. at the Bethke-Nelson Funeral Home in Drake.
Alfred E. Sherlock, son of Alfred A. and MaryEve (Feist) Sherlock, was born September 8, 1951 at Harvey. Al grew up on the family farm northeast of Drake and attended Drake Public School, graduating in 1969. At an early age, he began working with his father and brothers, farming, raising cattle and operating Sherlock Excavating.
Al served in the North Dakota National Guard from 1972 to 1980.
On July 23, 1983, Al married Sandra Holmes. Together they shared a life of family, friends, and a love of storytelling. They made their home in Anamoose for a time before moving to Drake and have lived on the Sherlock family farm since 1990. Al farmed until 1992 and continued to raise cattle until the late 1990's. He also trucked grain for a number of years, and operated Sherlock Excavating since the early 1990's.
Al had a kind heart and a generous spirit. Anyone new moving to town learned in a hurry that if they needed the use of a trailer or a quick fix on a sewer system, just call Al. His shop was a hangout for anyone who needed something repaired, or maybe just a visit. Many times, the visits would move from the shop to the house, for coffee or a beer, and to take a look at the big buck he caught on his trail cam. Anyone who knew Al knew they were in for a story when they heard the phrases "Let me tell you what ", and "Have I got a story for you " If you were in his company long enough, you would most likely be treated to a rendition of cowboy poetry. If you were really lucky, it would be Sandy's all-time favorite, "Bra Shopping for Ma."
Al was a member of the United Methodist Church of Drake and the David D. Nehrenberg American Legion Post #32 of Drake.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy; 2 sons, Jacob (Rachel Tanquist) of Eagle Lake, MN and Matthew (Shalane) of Bismarck; 1 sister, Sharon (Greg) Mannie of Glendive, MT and 1 brother, Steven (Debbie) Sherlock of Harvey.
Al was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dale.
