Amy A. Arnold Serfontein, 55, Mossel Bay, South Africa, formerly of Fessenden, North Dakota went to be with the Lord on October 22, 2022 in South Africa. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 2:00 pm at St. Augustine's Catholic Church, Fessenden, North Dakota. Fr. Steven Wirth will officiate and burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Fessenden, ND.
Amy Ann Arnold was born September 1, 1967 in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the eldest of five children to Ivan and Shirley (Benson) Arnold. She was baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rush City, Minnesota and confirmed at St. Augustine's, in Fessenden. She started her education in Rush City, Minnesota and Poplar, Montana before moving to Fessenden where she graduated in 1987. During High School she worked at the Tastee Freez, and babysat many children. After graduating, she attended Nurses Training in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
She married James (Charlie) Volk June 10, 1989. They made their home in Fessenden where they owned AJ's Motel and Offsale. Later on, they also ran a greenhouse until selling it in 2006. Of this union, one child Cassandra (Cassie) was born on July 4, 1993. It was during this time Amy worked at The Cabaret and T-Bones Supper Club as their Blackjack Dealer. She was also employed at Summers Manufacturing in Maddock, North Dakota for a time.
Amy met Gerhard (Jacob) Serfontein in Fessenden. They were married on August 21, 2018. They moved to South Africa where they made their home until Jacob passed away from a motorcycle accident in March of 2020. Amy Then moved to Phantom Croft Guest Lodge in October of 2020. It was here she met Mike Olsen, her best friend and partner, who was with her until she passed away. Together, they loved spending time at the ocean with their two dogs watching the dolphins and whales. Amy also loved to camp and fish.
Amy is survived by her daughter Cassandra (Cassie) Schmitz, Ocala, FL; father, Ivan (Betty) Arnold, sister, Shelly Arnold Lanenga, Mandan, three brothers, David,Glyndon, MN, Lee, Jamestown, and James, Bowdon, her partner Mike Olsen, two nieces, Amanda Lanenga, Bismarck and Sierra and Jordan Hoffer, Park River, Aunt Carol Devine, Pine City, MN, uncles Stanley (Pauline) Arnold, Ortley, SD, Carl Gerving, Pine City, MN numerous cousins and dear friend, Marian Erasmus, Rayton Guateng, SA.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Arnold, husband Jacob Serfontein, grandparents Albert and Leona Arnold, Leonard Benson, Arlene and Bernard Heckle, aunt Leona Gerving, uncles Jack Devine and Alan Benson, and cousins Cindy Gerving and Robin Arnold.
Our Family would like extend a special thank you to Marian Erasmus for all the love and support you showed Amy and for helping bring Amy home. Mike Olsen for being there for Amy in sickness and health.
