Byron Keith Nelson, son of Hjalmer and Mildred (Hagen) Nelson, was born July 26, 1942 at the Maddock Hospital. He attended the Lynne grade school in Norway Lake Township and high school at BCATS in Maddock, graduating in 1960. He then attended NDSU in Fargo for one quarter before transferring to the Wahpeton State School of Science where he studied general mechanics. He returned to NDSU for the short course in agriculture.
On December 3, 1963 he was united in marriage to Gail Stadig in the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. They spent their first 25 years of marriage living on the Glenn Rosendahl farm where they farmed and raised their 3 children. They then moved to the Nelson family farm where he continued to live until mid-December of 2016 when he required nursing home care due to his declining health.
Byron was a life long member of the Viking Church. He served on the Maddock School Board, the Norway Lake Twp. Board, the Wells County Soil Conservation Board, and W-E Wind LLC. He was always ready and willing to help a friend or neighbor in need of assistance. Byron thoroughly enjoyed visiting with people but most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.
For many years Byron and Gail owned a cabin at Brush Lake near Mercer, ND where he gained many life long friends and enjoyed fishing from the paddle boat and the lake life.
Most of all, Byron was a hard working farmer through and through. He liked to work with metal and created many yard ornaments.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gail; his children, Shelly (Jack) Kallenbach of Esmond, Perry (Jill) Nelson of Bismarck and Nikki (Rob) Schneider of Bismarck; and 7 grandchildren, Jamie & Kara Kallenbach, Jordan & Bree Nelson, Mariah Lawson and Bobbie & Samera Schneider.
Byron was preceded in death by his parents.
