Carol L Heringer, 91, Butte, ND passed away Monday, July 22, 2013 at Manorcare in Minot, ND.

Carol Lillian Simbalenko, daughter of Reverend Edward and Pauline (Lushenko) Simbalenko, was born December 22, 1921 in Kief, ND. She grew up in Kief and attended Kief Public School, graduating in 1938. She then enrolled at Minot Teachers College where she received her teaching certificate. Carol taught at Omemee and Max.

On September 6, 1942 she was married to Neil Heringer in Kief, ND. Their wedding ceremony was officiated by Carol's father, Rev. Edward Simbalenko. They made their home in California until 1945 when they returned to North Dakota and have resided in Butte since. She taught music and was a substitute teacher at the Butte school. She was a piano teacher for over 25 years. Many of her students continue to provide music to others. Boyd Zavalney was her last piano student.

Carol was a member of the Kief Mennonite Church until its closure and had since attended the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Butte, ND. She served as church organist and pianist for many years and played for numerous weddings, funerals and other events.

Carol enjoyed gardening, canning, and cooking. Carol's Russian dill pickles were a particular favorite with her family. She always made sure she saved a couple of jars for 'good company'. Granny's chocolate chip cookies were always a welcome treat for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed crafts, sewing, and quilting. She made many quilts over the years for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was also active in making quilts for the church.

Beginning in the early 1970's, Carol and Neil enjoyed spending time in Hawaii during the winter months.

Carol and Neil celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last summer. Carol loved the red roses she received from Neil for her birthdays and anniversaries. She always received eleven roses; Neil told her she was the twelfth rose.

Carol is survived by her loving husband Neil of Butte and three children; Sharon (Keith) Lorentzen of Butte, Neil (Rebecca) Heringer Jr. of rural Wilton, and Nancy (Michael) Carson of Bismarck; 11 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers and 6 sisters.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 29, 2013 at 11:00 am at St Paul Lutheran Church in Butte, ND.

Burial will be at the Butte Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be open to the public from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at the Bethke-Nelson Funeral Home in Drake, ND.
