Donald Long, 67, rural Heaton, passed away after his courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Donald Kenneth Long, son of Kenneth and Beulah (Patrie) Long, was born October 10, 1951 at Harvey. He grew up on the Long family farm south of Bowdon and attended Bowdon Public School, graduating in 1969. He then enrolled at Valley City State College where he graduated in 1973 with a degree in elementary education. In addition to farming with his father, Don taught school for a short time in Sheldon and Medina and substitute taught in Bowdon and Fessenden.

On August 10, 1980, Don was united in marriage to Patti Wanzek at Windsor, ND. They made their home on a farm northwest of Heaton where they have farmed and ranched since.

Don was a past member of the Hurdsfield Church of the Nazarene. He was active in community affairs, serving on several boards including the Farmers Union Oil Company Board, North Dakota Farm Bureau Board, Speedwell Township Board and the Fessenden School Board. He was also a member of the Bowdon Lions Club.

Don enjoyed his daily morning breakfast at Miller's meat shop. He enjoyed being able to visit with others. One conversation with Don and he never forgot you. Don especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Patti; his children, Josh (Susan) Nannenga of Harvey, Faye (Shad) Kusler of Mandan, Devin (Melanie) Long of rural Bowdon and Travis (Brittany) Long of rural Bowdon; 8 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Mary Ellen (LeRoy) Dockter of Fargo, Eileene (David) Swardstrom of Naperville, IL and Alice (John) Westby of Bismarck; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation: Thursday, from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Fessenden

Funeral: Friday, February 1, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at the Bowdon Lutheran Church in Bowdon.

Burial: Wayside Cemetery in Bowdon.
