Doris Fortney, 95, Bowdon, passed away Monday, November 6, 2017 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford. Her funeral will be held Saturday, November 11, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bowdon Lutheran Church with burial in the Wayside Cemetery of Bowdon. Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Fessenden.
Doris Fossum, daughter of Anton and Ragna (Neilson) Fossum, was born October 19, 1922 at rural Maddock where she was raised and educated. She began helping out on the family farm at an early age, and later worked as a waitress in a Fessenden café for several years.
Doris was married to James Fortney on July 15, 1945 in Maddock. They made their home on the Fortney farm on the west edge of Bowdon where they raised their three children and lived all their married lives.
Doris was a member of the Bowdon Lutheran Church, WELCA, Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, and Bowdon Museum Board.
She enjoyed entertaining family and friends, flower gardening, painting, cake decorating, watching birds, playing games and cards, but she loved the Christmas holidays.
Doris is survived by her son, Paul (Janel) Fortney of New Rockford; her daughter, Jane (Dan) Snellman of Dillon, MT; daughter-in-law, Pat Fortney of Bowdon; Grandchildren: Michelle (Kelly) Fike, Tammi Fortney (Jonathan Judd), Heidi (Aaron) Schmitz, Jon Fortney, Jacob (Amber) Fortney, Rachel (Evan) Savageau, Scott Snellman, Jason (Julie) Snellman, and Joshua Snellman; Great-grandchildren: Maren Fike, Oliver, Davie, and Monroe Judd, Sydney, Bailey, Brooklyn, and Alexis Schmitz, Azja Fortney, Jaxon and Dayvah Fortney, Halle Savageau, Shaun and Shelby Snellman; Sister-in-laws, Helene Fossum and Phyllis Weed and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; son, David; her parents; sister, Selma 'Sally' Pellett; and brothers, Milton, Norman and Dennis.
