Douglas Olschlager, 69, Harvey, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 7, 2018 at his home at rural Harvey. His funeral will be held Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey with burial at the Hillside Cemetery in Fessenden. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. followed by a 7 P.M. prayer service all at the church. Arrangements are with Nelson Funeral Home of Fessenden.
Douglas Olschlager, son of Harold and Betty (Erfle) Olschlager, was born August 23, 1948 at Harvey. He grew up on the family farm south of Manfred and attended the nearby St. Anna Township Country School through the 6 th grade before enrolling at Fessenden Public School where he graduated in 1967. He then attended Valley City State College where he received a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Industrial Education, Geography and Psychology in 1971.
On June 1, 1971, he was united in marriage to Karen Clarys in Courtenay. They made their home in Killdeer where they began their teaching careers. Doug resigned from teaching in 1978 and began his career with New York Life Insurance Company. He worked with the company in Williston, Fargo and Bismarck before returning to the family farm in 1988 where he took over the farming operation and continued to operate the brokerage business he had established in Bismarck. Following his farm auction in 2003, Doug rejoined New York Life Insurance Company and continued as an agent until retiring in 2017. During his career with NYL, Doug received many awards including, National Quality Award, National Achievement Award, Life Member of the Million Dollar Round Table, various Sales Leader Awards and he was appointed to numerous company councils.
Doug was also active in community and church affairs. He served on the St. Augustine and St. Cecilia Catholic Church councils, the Cenex Board of Directors and was a member of the Harvey Knights of Columbus and Kiwanis Club. He also served as a hunter safety instructor for many years. He loved to hunt and fish with family and friends and took great comfort in God's outdoor creation.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Karen; 4 children, Brad (Beth) of Harvey, Travis (fiancee-Elissa Nyhus) of Harvey, Scott (Christine) of Villard, MN and Deann (Justin) Stanley of Harvey; and 14 grandchildren, Rowan, Ava, Cruz, Lyric, Briar, Gage, Emmarose, Adelynne, Jade, Taylor, Sean, Brennen, Kaitlyn and Ethan.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Betty Olschlager and brother, David.
