She grew up on the family farm and attended the Bowman Consolidated School through the eighth grade. She then attended Fessenden High School, graduating in 1940.

In 1943, Ella moved to Washington state for employment. She met and married Robert Fancher, Jr. in 1944 in Wenatchee. Following Robert's death, Ella returned to the Fessenden area and in 1948 she was married to Harvey Lenz. They farmed northeast of Fessenden.

Ella was multi-talented with many hobbies including china painting, ceramics, various types of handwork including embroidery, cutwork, and sewing clothing for family and many others in the community. She also wove rugs on a loom, tooled leatherwork, and collected and repaired many, many dolls. Ella loved photographing old barns, and dancing and listening to waltzes and polkas.
