Elsie Jacobson, 100, Butte, ND passed away Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014 at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva. Her funeral will be held Friday, September 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Velva with burial at the Butte Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Bethke-Nelson Funeral Home in Drake. A prayer service will be held Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at the church.

Elsie Sandhofner, daughter of John and Christine (Kowasch) Sandhofner, was born February 4, 1914 in Butte Township, near Ruso, ND, where she was raised and educated.

In October of 1931, she was married to Charlie Maesner. To this union one son Clarence was born. She later separated from Charlie and in 1935 moved to Jamestown, ND where she was employed at the North Dakota State Hospital for eight years. Following her mother's death , Elsie returned to rural Ruso to help care for her younger brothers and sisters.

In 1947, Elsie was married to Clarence Jacobson. They purchased a farm six miles south of Butte where they resided until 1994 when they built a home in Butte. Following Clarence's death, Elsie remained in Butte until 2011 when she entered the Souris Valley Assisted Living Home in Velva.

Elsie was very active in community affairs. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 66 years, was an active member of the local senior citizens and participated in many programs and activities. She loved playing cards and games and working word puzzles.

Elsie's greatest joy was the 100th birthday party in her honor which was held at the Butte American Legion hall. She was so thankful for all who could attend and for those who remembered her with cards.

For many years, Elsie helped make mission quilts with the local church and also made polyester rugs which she sold so she could buy material to make more.

She is survived by her granddaughter, Collette Judd; great-granddaughter, Kyla Judd; one sister, Ruth Kastner of Minot; and a number of nieces and nephews including Linda Hovde, Shirley Griffitt and Darlene Hurtovenko all of Minot, Cindy Gleason of Minnesota and Obert Jacobson of Towner.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; her son, Clarence Maesner; her parents; eight brothers and two sister.

In lieu of flowers , the family prefers memorials be given to a charity of your choice.
