Fern Schmaltz Reinowski, 78, Anamoose, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Sanford Health in Bismarck. Her funeral will be held Monday, October 13, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Anamoose with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church on Sunday. A prayer service will be held Sunday evening at 7 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are with Bethke-Nelson Funeral Home of Drake.

Fern Paur, daughter of William and Dorothea (Schwarze) Paur, was born February 22, 1936 at rural Anamoose where she grew up and attended the White Township School. She later attended Anamoose High School, graduating in 1954.

On May 16, 1955 she was married to Anthony Schmaltz in Anamoose where they made their home. In 1976 they purchased the Anamoose Café. Following Mr. Schmaltz's death on December 21, 1983, Fern continued to own and operate the café until 1993. She then moved to Fargo where she was employed by North Dakota State University in their west dining center for several years. She returned to Anamoose in 1998 and on January 9, 1999 she was married to Francis Reinowski. Francis passed away December 2, 2006.

Fern worked part time as cook for the Anamoose Public School when needed and also helped out at the Anamoose Café. She enjoyed baking, doing puzzles, playing rack rummy, reading and working in her garden. When you entered Fern's home you felt welcome and seldom left without having something to eat.

Fern was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and local VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Geralyn Schmaltz of Bismarck and Susan (Chris) Lanctot of St. Charles, MO; one son, David Schmaltz of Gwinner; 2 step-daughters, Carla Reinowski of Hutchinson, MN and Janis (Dan) Moylan of Bismarck; 2 step-sons, Kevin (Debbie) Reinowski and Keith (Brenda) Reinowski of Anamoose; 13 grandchildren, Brandon (Kate) Naylor, Aric (friend Katelyn) Schnase, Nicholas & Brooke Schmaltz, Kristin & Lee Reinowski, Bradley, Amy & Jay Moylan, Paul & Andrew Kuhn, and Jessica & Joshua Lanctot; and 2 brothers, George Paur of Wahpeton and Donald (Helen) Paur of Appleton, MO.

Fern was preceded in death by her husbands, Anthony and Francis; a daughter, Janelle; her parents; 2 brothers, Ted (Rosie) and Clifford; sister-in-law: Joyce (Mrs. George) Paur; and her special friend, Elroy Stotz.
