Fred Olschlager, 87, Fessenden, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at the St. Aloisius Hospital in Harvey. His funeral will be held Saturday, March 28 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Fessenden with burial at the Hillside Cemetery of Fessenden. Visitation will be held Friday from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Fessenden.

Fred Olschlager, son of George and Katherine 'Katie' (Kleinsasser) Olschlager, was born April 5, 1927 near Manfred, ND in Delger Township southwest of Fessenden where he grew up and attended a nearby country school. He began farming at an early age and continued until 1950 when he entered the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge on December 10, 1952, he returned to the Manfred area and resumed farming.

On October 27, 1953 he was married to Marlys Owen at Fessenden. They made their home on the home farm until 1989 when they moved into Fessenden. Although Fred retired from farming in 1993 he continued to help on the farm when needed and made his daily trips to the farm for many years.

One of Fred's greatest enjoyments came from farming and he was happiest whenever he was in any type of farm machinery, especially during harvest time. In his words "this is when I get to reap the fruits of my labor".

Fred was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Fessenden; the Frank Proisl American Legion Post #33 of Fessenden; and the V.F.W. Post #1868 of Harvey.

He is survived by his wife, Marlys; sisters-in-law, Joyce Olschlager and Mayme Olschlager both of Fargo; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary; 3 brothers, Walter, Roy and infant brother, Vernon; and his half brother, Albert.
