Garnet M. Free's Obituary
Garnet Free, 75, Harvey, formerly of rural Heimdal, passed away Monday, January 22, 2018 at CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck.
Garnet Skiftun, daughter of Bernard and Ruth (Rodne) Skiftun, was born November 30, 1942 at Harvey. She grew up on the family farm near Heimdal and attended Heimdal Elementary School. She received her high school education at the Fessenden High School and, upon graduating in 1960, she enrolled at NDSU and Interstate Business College in Fargo. She worked for Montgomery Ward in Oregon from 1964-65 and Balmer Motors in Moorhead from 1966-69 as a bookkeeper.
On July 5, 1969, Garnet was united in marriage to Dallas Free in Dilworth, MN. They made their home in Bowdon where Garnet worked as office manager at the Bowdon Public School from 1972-1979. In 1979 they moved to the Skiftun farm west of Heimdal where they farmed until 1997. In addition to helping on the farm, Garnet worked at several locations in Harvey through the years, including Lautt's Feed and Supply, St. Aloisius Medical Center and Ralph's Super Value and later Heinrich's Super Value.
Garnet was a member, Sunday school teacher, and treasurer at the Hoff Lutheran Church in Heimdal. She was a 4-H leader for 25 years and started the 4-H exchange program for Wells County. She enjoyed spending time in her yard, tending to her flowers and large garden. She loved to visit and attend community events with her friends.
Garnet is survived by her children, JoDee Free of Bismarck and Chad (Toni) Free of Hurricane, UT; 3 granddaughters, Kristen (Chris) McBride, Stevie (Chris) Scott and Samantha Free; 7 great-grandchildren, Lexzi, Karter, Rieley, Gianna & Nova and Bentley & Braxton; 1 brother, Roger (Linda) Skiftun of Harvey; and 1 sister-in-law, Charlotte Skiftun of Carrington.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas who passed away May 21, 2015; her parents; and her brother, Donald.
Funeral: Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 11:00 A. M. at the First Lutheran Church in Fessenden.
Visitation: Friday from 3 P.M. to 6 P.M. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Fessenden
Burial: Hoff Lutheran Cemetery of rural Heimdal.
