Joseph Braunagel, 92, Fargo, formerly of Chaseley, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2019 at Bethany Retirement Home in Fargo after a long struggle with cancer.

Joseph was born February 24, 1927 to Anton 'Tony' and Otilda (Filler) Braunagel on his parent's farm north of Harvey, ND. The family moved to Chaseley in 1931 where they continued to farm and operate a trucking business. Joseph was raised in Chaseley and attended the Chaseley Public School.

Joseph enlisted in the Army in 1945 and served his country during World War II. One of his duties was guarding German POWs after the war ended. He was honorably discharged in 1947.

Joseph again answered his country's call, enlisting in the Navy in 1950 and served in the Korean War until he was discharged in 1954. While in the Navy, he served aboard the amphibious transport ships, USS Marquette and USS Whitley.

After the war, Joseph returned to Chaseley, where he operated Braunagel and Son Truck Line with his father for many years. He later worked for Fessenden Co-op until his retirement.

Joseph married Joyce Murdoff on May 25, 1963 in West Fargo. The newlyweds moved back to Chaseley where they raised their 3 sons and lived the rest of their lives. Joyce died on November 9, 2003.

In addition to his wife, Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, brother Lawrence, sister Elizabeth Emerson and a stillborn son.

He is survived by his 3 sons; Justin (Evangi Paxton) Braunagel of Fallbrook, CA, Jesse (Heidi) Braunagel of Fargo, ND and Joshua (Gladys) Braunagel of Chula Vista, CA; brother Alvin of Bismarck, ND; sister Caroline (Markwart) of Bismarck, ND; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives.

He was a longtime member of the Chaseley United Methodist Church and the American Legion and was a founding member of the Hurdsfield American Legion Post in 1956.

Funeral: Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at the Chaseley United Methodist Church in Chaseley.

Visitation: Friday evening beginning at 6:00 P.M., followed by a 7:00 P.M. prayer service at the Nelson Funeral Home in Fessenden.

Burial: Chaseley Cemetery.
