John Edwin Haugen 97, Butte, ND, went home to be with his Savior, on Christmas Day, Wednesday, December 25, 2019 at Minot. He spent the previous evening with his beloved wife, Dolores, and his eight children, and many grandchildren, singing hymns, praising God, and speaking only of his great love for his children and his family and his insatiable hunger for the love of God.

John was born on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1922, five miles south of Butte, ND. The son of Norwegian immigrants, Edward and Emma (Rhenstron) Haugen, John was raised on the family farm with his younger brother Roland. Early in his life, the family moved across the prairie just a few miles east of his birth place. John would remain on the family farm for 62 years. He raised Holstein cows and a large sprawling family of eight on this farm with the love of his life, Dolores, his wife of 74 years.

John married Dolores Schott on June 7, 1945 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Butte. Worshiping with his family at St. Paul's would become a place that was dear to John as he declared his faith in Jesus Christ, and his deep abiding love for God, his family, and his devotion to his community.

Always active in many community organizations, John showed his faithfulness to his neighbors and community by never neglecting his responsibility to care and serve those he lived around.

Retiring with Dolores in 1985, they moved to their present home in Butte. He was a man of the soil and he loved to raise a big garden. He filled his ground with apple trees and vegetables of every kind. He was delighted to see his grandchildren and great grandchildren run through his yard, (as long as they didn't run in the garden).

John loved to fish, play pinochle, and drink coffee with his many friends and neighbors. His greatest joy was his family and he never missed a moment to tell anyone he met that he had been richly blessed by God with the best children in the world.

His surviving family includes: his wife, Dolores, Butte; his eight children, sons, James (Sandy), on the family farm, Butte, Michael (Janice), San Tan Valley, AZ., Patrick (Shelly), Bismarck, Jerry (Marilyn), rural Butte, and Dan (Christal), Max, his daughters, Dorathy (Larry) Schatz, rural Bergen, Darlene (Gary) Letvin, rural Kief, and Elaine (Ray) Carlson, Minot; his brother, Roland (MaryAnn), Butte; his brother-in-law, Gary (Shelley) Schott, Minneapolis, and sister-in-law, Alice Schott, Bismarck. John's legacy is also carried on by 29 grandchildren, 68 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren. He was loved by many nieces and nephews as well.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Emma Haugen and 3 infant brothers.

John awaits his family, in his Father's house, a mansion with many rooms.

Funeral: Monday, December 30, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Butte.

Visitation will be held Sunday, December 29, from 3 P.M. to 6 P.M. followed by a 6 P.M. prayer service all at St. Paul Lutheran Church.
