Obituary

John McDermott, 84, Minot, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2016 at the Trinity Hospital in Minot.

John E. McDermott, son of James E. And Vena L. (Whitney) McDermott, was born January 15, 1931 at Van Nuys, CA where he was raised. He graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1949. John later attended and graduated from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI.

In March of 1949 he entered the United States Marines. Shortly after receiving his honorable discharge from the Marines in 1950, John enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country until his retirement on January 31, 1974.

John was united in marriage to Eileen Kapfer Peiler on June 27, 1975.

Following his military retirement, John worked as a civilian at the Minot Air Force Base for several years, and later with Job Service of North Dakota before beginning employment with Burlington Northern Railroad.

John was a member of the Military Retired Organization, the American Legion Post #26 and was a life member of the DAV Minot Chapter #4, all of Minot. While serving in the Air Force he received the US Air Force Commendation Medal and the US Air Force Good Conduct Medal.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Eileen; 4 children, John McDermott of Minneapolis, MN, Vena (Ron) Duchsherer of Minot, Melissa (Dan) Spratto of Ogden, UT and Wendy Georgevich of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; 1 step-son, Brian (Andrea) Peiler of Hermiston, OR; 2 step-daughters, Brenda Preskey of Minot and Tanya (Nathan) Ammon of Anamoose; 9 grandchildren, Jacob Ammon, Aimee Duchsherer, Christopher Wilson, Virginia Pearson, Elisabeth Spratto, Paul Georgevich, Mathew Georgevich, Stephanie Georgevich and Joshua Ammon; 10 great- grandchildren, Clarissa Pearson, Nathaniel Pearson, Mishayla Broen, Laira Georgevich, Laine Georgevich, Lydia Georgevich, Caitlyn Pearson, Jayden Wilson, Logan Pearson and Cole Broen; 1 sister, Patricia Thomas of Las Vegas, NV and 1 brother, James McDermott of Yuma, AZ.

John was preceded in death by his parents, James & Vena McDermott; his step-mother, Marjorie Rapier McDermott; 2 sisters, Marian and Katherine Jean McDermott; and 1 brother, Richard Robert McDermott.

Funeral: Friday, January 15, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot.
Burial: Rosehill Memorial Cemetery of Minot.
