Joyce Haykel, 87, Harvey, formerly of Drake, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2016 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey. A private family service will be held Monday, January 25, 2016 at the Bethke-Nelson Funeral Home in Drake, followed by burial at the Drake City Cemetery.

Joyce Haykel (Sherlock) was born November 29, 1928 to Edward and Olga (Ries) Sherlock in Drake, ND. Joyce was one of seven children, William, Charles, Alfred, Laurel, Erma and Clarice. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from the Drake school system. She attended business school in Minot and moved to San Francisco, CA shortly after her graduation. She worked as an administrative assistant for DuPont until she met and married Ernest Haykel.

Joyce worked with her husband at the Drake Insurance Agency for many years. She began her own income tax preparation service and was a mutual fund representative until her retirement. She also had a small farm that brought her much peace and joy.

Joyce lived in Billings, MT for many years where she was able to enjoy the company of her daughter Louise (deceased), son-in-law Mike, and grandchildren. She spent the last years of her life in Harvey, ND. Joyce suffered disability due to a stroke but continued writing and offering encouragement to those with disabilities and challenges. She was a member of the residents' council at Evergreen in Billings and St. Aloisius in Harvey. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and worked as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society.

She is survived by her daughter Lorna Timmerman of Bremerton, WA; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and three sisters, Erma Usselman of Tioga, Laurel Usselman of Harvey and Clarice Martin of Minot.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Louise; her husband, Ernest; grandson, Ben; her parents; and her brothers, William, Charles & Alfred.
