Laura Hoff, 87, Hurdsfield, passed away Friday, March 1, 2013 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey.
Laura Grover, daughter of Harold and Martha (Tiedtke) Grover, was born March 7, 1925, at Hurdsfield. She grew up in the Hurdsfield, Chaseley and Bowdon areas and received her education at Chaseley and later Bowdon where she graduated in 1943. As a young girl she worked at Herman and Flossie Tiedtke's grocery store in Chaseley and also at Wilbur's Grocery Store in Bowdon for several years. When World War II began, Laura traveled to the state of Washington where she worked for Boeing as one of the Rosie the Riveters. While there, she received the efficiency pin for excellent work.
On November 7, 1948, Laura was married to Harry Hoff at Bowdon. They made their home southwest of Bowdon where they farmed until 1960. They then moved to Chaseley where they owned and operated the Hoff Grocery Store until moving to Hurdsfield in 1989. Following Harry's death on December 23, 2006, she remained in Hurdsfield.
Laura was an active member of the Chaseley United Methodist Church where she took the Sunday roll call each week and sent cards to the sick, the shut ins, and all those who were in need of one.
Laura's home was a favorite gathering place where family and friends could pop in anytime for a game of cards or dominoes, or just to visit over a cup of coffee. She hosted the United Methodist Bible study group for many years. Her quick wit and gift of gab made her a pleasure to be around. Laura was always busy doing something. She had a knack for fixing things that needed fixing and building whatever she set her mind to, such as a cuckoo clock or bird houses. She enjoyed collecting miniature shoes, watching the birds, playing games, putting puzzles together, making delicious pickles and was an avid bowler in her earlier years.
She was also active in the community where she did volunteer work with Relay For Life and was very involved with organizing the Bowdon reunions and centennial and Hurdsfield centennial through the years. She kept people informed of the activities in the community through her writing for the Herald-Press and the Foster County Independent weekly newspapers. Laura was an awesome lady whom everyone loved.
Laura especially loved spending time with her family. For many years she served as manager of the Bowdon women's softball team which her daughters played on, and traveled near and far to attend any events they were involved in.
Laura is survived by her three daughters, Nahldene 'Red' Hoff of Hurdsfield, Shelly Hoff of Underwood and Tammy (Merv) Knecht of Hurdsfield; 2 granddaughters, Kara Knecht and Kayla Knecht & her boyfriend Todd Kraft of Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Jack Grover; and two sisters, Arvilla Grover and Arlene Kunz.

Funeral: Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Chaseley United Methodist Church.
Visitation: Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Fessenden.
Burial: Wayside Cemetery in Bowdon.
