Leona Baumbach, 99, Hurdsfield, passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey. Her funeral will be held Monday, January 15, at 2:00 P. M. at the Goodrich Seventh-day Adventist Church in Goodrich with burial at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Hurdsfield. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4 P. M. to 5 P. M. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Fessenden.
Leona Schmitt, daughter of John and Pauline (Faul) Schmitt, and the oldest of 10 children, was born August 28, 1918 at Hurdsfield.
On October 4, 1938 she was married to Arthur Baumbach in Carrington at the Ford Garage by the Justice of the Peace who's office was located in that garage. Together, she and Arthur had 3 sons, Dallas, Jordell and Gary.
They lived and farmed near Hurdsfield until 1946 when they moved to a farm near Chaseley. In 1948, Leona began working at the St. Aloisius Hospital in Harvey and continued for over 30 years. She made many lifelong friends and memories, and was very proud to be a part of the nursing community. In 1967 they moved into Hurdsfield where she continued to reside until 2017 when she entered the St. Aloisius Nursing Home. Arthur passed away June 2, 2011.
Leona truly loved her family and was always asking about the details of their lives. She always remembered everything. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading and piddling in her yard with her garden and flowers. Her favorite family dishes were Russian Fluff and Knoephla .
She is survived by her sons, Dallas (Loretta) Baumbach of Hurdsfield and Gary (Becky) Baumbach of Spiritwood; 7 grandchildren, Kevin (Diane) Baumbach, Lori (Dave) Novak, Brenda (Tim) Rhone, Wendy (Mitch) Erfle, Avolt (Jennifer) Baumbach, Larry Baumbach & Leigh Baumbach; 22 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Alice McCrossin and 3 brothers, Elmer, Glen and Jerry Schmitt.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Jordell; grandson, Robert; great-great granddaughter, Laken; 2 brothers, John & Alvin; and 3 sisters, Rosella, Esther & Gertrude.
