Lorraine Hovland Olson, 87, Maddock, formerly of Heimdal, passed away Friday, May 12, 2017 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey.
Lorraine Lindbo, daughter of Gilbert and Celia (Olson) Lindbo, was born February 27, 1930 at Harvey. Her early years were spent on the Lindbo family farm near Heimdal where she attended country school and later Heimdal Public School. In 1943 she moved with her family to Rugby where she attended Rugby High School and in 1945 they moved to Fargo.
On June 12, 1946, she was united in marriage to Elmer Hovland in Moorhead, MN. They made their home on the Hovland family farm northwest of Heimdal where they farmed until retiring in 1979. Lorraine enjoyed gardening and canning and was thankful to have been able to raise her children on the farm. In 1995 they moved to Fessenden. Elmer passed away November 1, 1996. On May 26, 2000, Lorraine was married to Henning Olson in Nashua, IA. They made their home in Heimdal until moving to Maddock in 2007. Henning passed away November 2, 2009.
Lorraine was a member of the Bethania Lutheran Church of Wellsburg until its closure in 1976 and had since been a member of Hoff Lutheran Church in Heimdal.
She enjoyed baking, cooking, dancing and crocheting afghans for all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Her special enjoyment was spending time with her family. She felt blessed to be able to babysit her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Duane (Rose) of Underwood, MN, Arlyss (Jon) Bergrud of Maddock, Darrell (Linda) of Penn, Bradley (Debbie) of Maddock, Cheryl Hovland of West Fargo and Mark (Linda) of Fessenden; 15 grandchildren: Andrea (Mike) Metcalf, Aaron (Kelly) Hovland, Corey (Viki) Bergrud, Carrie Rice (Mike Hegg), Aimee (Joe) Schmit, Aanen (Annie) Bergrud. Nina (Chris) Rhode, Katie Hovland (Corey Schuh), Kelsey Hovland. Corey (Andrea) Motschenbacher, Cassandra Hovland, Justin (Kayla) Hovland, Jalissa (Andy) Hoffman, Kayla (Jared) Hotakainen, Riley Hovland (Jessica Priebe); 21 great-grandchildren: Maya, Cora and Brody Metcalf, Avery and Easton Hovland; Brandon and Kendall Bergrud, Briana (Joe) Jackson; Brett Rice (Emma Kramlich), Brittni Rice (Robby Kern), Brady Rice; Syndey Schmit; Samantha, Easton and Nora Bergrud; Cora Rhode, Lane Schuh; Braeton, Ian and Emery Motschenbacher; Gage Hotakainen; and 2 great-great-grandchildren: Mason Bergrud and Paislee Kern.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husbands, her parents and 2 sisters, Gladys and Ruth.
Funeral: Friday, May 19, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Viking Lutheran Church of rural Maddock.
Visitation: Thursday, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Fessenden
Prayer Service: Thursday evening at 7:00 P.M. at Viking Lutheran Church
Burial: Bethania Lutheran Cemetery of Wellsburg.
