Mabel Nechiporenko, 98, Butte, passed away Monday, January 25, 2016 at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva.
Mabel Berg, daughter of Hjalmar and Marie (Sundbakken) Berg, was born April 7, 1917 at rural Plaza, ND. The family lived in Ruso for a time before moving to the Butte area where her father was employed as a foreman with the railroad. Growing up in a large family provided plenty of opportunity to learn to cook, clean and help take care of younger brothers and sisters. Some of Mabel's fondest childhood memories were from the summers she spent at her aunt and uncle's farm near Fosston, MN.
Mabel graduated from Butte High School. She worked for a time for the North Dakota Board of Cosmetology in Grand Forks and later as a care giver for a family in Minneapolis. On March 25, 1939 she was married to Sam Nechiporenko in Max. They lived with Sam's family on their rural Butte farm for the first year of their marriage before moving into Butte where they made their home and raised their family. Sam worked as a bulk truck driver for the Standard Oil Company.
Mabel was a hard-working homemaker, raising a large garden each year and caring for her home and family. After Sam passed away on May 25, 2000, she continued to reside at her home in Butte until entering the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva on September 23, 2009.
She is survived by 2 sons, Kenneth (Barbara) of Bismarck and Ronald (Cindy) of Butte; 4 grandchildren, Allen (Jolene) Nechiporenko, Blaine (Amy) Nechiporenko, Tracy McNamara and David Nichols; 7 great-grandchildren, Nicky, Natalie, Kira & Cole, and Jennifer, Jeremy & Rand; one great-great-granddaughter, Azure; one sister, Sylvia Willoughby of North Dakota; one brother, Kenneth Berg of Long Beach, CA. ; and many nieces and nephews.
