Margaret Zumpf, 97, of Bismarck, formerly of Hamberg, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013 at a Bismarck nursing home. Her funeral will be held Saturday, September 28 at 10:30 a.m. At the First Lutheran Church in Fessenden with burial at the Hillside Cemetery of Fessenden. Visitation will be held Friday from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Nelson Funeral Home of Fessenden.

Margaret Scheer, daughter of John and Marguerite (Peper) Scheer, was born June 19, 1916 on her parents farm near Hamberg where she grew up and attended country school. Following her graduation from the Benson County Agricultural School in Maddock, Margaret attended Valley City Teachers College where she earned her teaching certificate. She then taught for several years in Kensal.

On September 16, 1939 she was married to Earl Zumpf at the Concordia Lutheran Church northeast of Fessenden. They made their home in Hamberg where Margaret served as Postmistress for over 35 years. She also assisted with the operation of Earl's Bar which she and Earl owned for many years.

Following their retirement, they began spending their winters in Mesa, AZ. They also traveled extensively through the United States and Europe and enjoyed several cruises to the Carribean, Alaska and Hawaii.

They continued to reside in Hamberg until moving to Bismarck in 2008. Earl passed away March 16, 2010.

Margaret was a member of the Hamberg Lutheran Church until its closure. They then transferred their membership to the First Lutheran Church in Fessenden.

Margaret is survived by her son, John (Ethana) Zumpf of Miles City, MT; daughter-in-law, Shirley Zumpf of Payton, CO; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and 1 step great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, David; her parents; 1 brother, Harold Scheer; and 2 sisters, Esther Winther and Dorothy Krahler.
