Obituary

Neil W. Heringer, 96, Butte, passed away Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the Trinity Hospital in Minot

Neil William Heringer, son of William and Sophia (Wagner) Heringer, was born May 2, 1920 at Butte, ND. He grew up in Butte and attended Butte Public School, graduating in 1938. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for one year before enrolling at Minot Teachers College where he received his teaching certificate. In 1941 he traveled west where he worked as a welder in the shipyards.

On September 6, 1942 he was married to Carol Simbalenko at Kief. They lived in California until 1945 when they returned to Butte where Neil taught at a rural school north of Butte for one year. He taught the following four years at the Butte Public School.

In addition to his work as a teacher and rural mail carrier, he worked at Heringer Blacksmith Shop and later took over the business from his father. Rumor has it that he could weld a corn cob to a rail road tie. His shop was not only a place for machinery repair, but of comfort to all who would bend his ear.

Beginning in the early 1970's, Neil and Carol enjoyed spending time in Hawaii during the winter months for several years.

Neil was a member of the Kief Mennonite Church until its closure and then joined St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Butte. He was also a member of the North Dakota Metal Workers Association, the Rural Mail Carriers Association and the Masons.

He is survived by three children, Sharon (Keith) Lorentzen of Butte, Neil (Rebecca) Heringer Jr. of rural Wilton and Nancy (Michael) Carson of Bismarck; 9 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter.

Neil was preceded in death by his wife Carol on July 22, 2013; his parents; 3 sisters, Evelyn Schimke, Esther Klokonos and Maxine Heringer; and two great-grandchildren.
