Richard M Johnson's Obituary
Richard M. Johnson, 83, Fessenden, formerly of Dickinson, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at Sanford Health in Bismarck. His funeral will be held Thursday, June 28 at 10:00 A. M. at the First Lutheran Church in Fessenden followed by burial at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan at 2:00 P. M. Arrangements with Nelson Funeral Home of Fessenden.
Richard Morris Johnson, son of Frank and Anna (Krook) Johnson, was born June 29, 1934 at LaMoure, ND. He was raised and educated in Fullerton, ND and, upon graduating from Fullerton High School, attended the State Normal and Industrial College in Ellendale. In 1953, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Stormes DD780 out of Norfolk, VA.
On August 6, 1956, Richard was united in marriage to Dorothy Jean Roeszler in Fullerton. Following his honorable discharge in 1957, Richard completed his B. S. Degree in Industrial Arts. He taught school in Glasgow, MT until 1966 when he accepted a teaching position in Dickinson where he taught until retiring in 1996. Dorothy passed away March 26, 2006.
While living in Dickinson, Richard was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, the Dickinson Elks and he served on the board of directors for the Dakota Dinosaur Museum. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spent many hours searching for Indian artifacts and fossils.
On May 31, 2011, Richard was married to Marion Newman in Fessenden where they have resided since. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Fessenden.
He is survived by his wife, Marion; his 4 children, David (Meg) Johnson of Covina, CA, Jeanne (Jerry) Koppinger of Cheyenne, WY, Sandra (Duane) Schaff of Bismarck and Jay Johnson of Meeker, CO; 4 grandchildren, Frances, Heather, Nicholas and Richard; 6 step-children, John Scheer, James Scheer, Debra Wiest, David Harrison, Timothy Scheer and Karen Scott; 11 step-grandchildren; 6 step-great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Mildred Enockson of Valley City and 1 brother, Robert Johnson of Fergus Falls, MN.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; grandson, Jacob Schaff; 1 brother, George Reynold and step-son, Michael Scheer.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be designated to St. John's Lutheran Trust Fund in Dickinson and the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.
