Robert 'Bob'
Eugene Newman
Aug 7, 1928 — Aug 29, 2019
Roswell, formerly of rural Fessenden, ND
Robert (Bob) Eugene Newman, 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 29, 2019 in his apartment at the Arbor Terrace Assisted Living in Roswell, GA. His wife Sharon, and son Rohn were at his side.
Robert was born August 7, 1928 to Emil and Clara (Skaar) Newman on their farm North of Fessenden, ND.
In 1936 the family moved to a farm Southeast of Hamberg, ND where he grew up and attended a one room country school. He attended high school in Fessenden and graduated in 1946. He worked on the family farm with his father and brother.
Robert was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. In 1952 that church was destroyed by fire. He served on the committee to locate, purchase and move another church to the former church's location. He also served as a church trustee and a Sunday school teacher.
Robert loved hunting, competitive shooting, and was a certified gun safety instructor. He was a founding member of the Hamberg Gun Club as well as a member of the Harvey Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Robert had an amazing talent for drawing cartoons of people, animals, vehicles and buildings. He often claimed he drew his way through high school by doing art projects for the teachers, staff and the school paper.
On June 7, 1953 he married Sharon Shulkey of Fresno, CA. During the summers they made their home in Hamburg, ND where Robert farmed. Their winters were spent traveling the US while Robert built concrete grain elevators for the Borton Corporation of Hutchinson, KS. They spent the winter of 1957 working for the Teletype Corporation in Chicago, IL.
Robert and Sharon have one son, Rohn, born August 6, 1968.
In 1982 the family transferred their church membership to First Lutheran Church in Fessenden, ND where they remain members to this day.
After retirement, Robert and Sharon spent their winters in Mesa, AZ where they enjoyed attending social and cultural events. They also enjoyed traveling, often with their son, to destinations throughout the continental United States as well as to Alaska, Great Britain and France. Robert especially enjoyed riding on flights that his son Rohn was piloting.
In 2007 Robert and Sharon moved their winter home to Canton, GA close to their son. Shortly after, Rohn married Elisa (Faherty) and in 2011 their first grandchild, Caleb, was born. Their second grandchild, Eli, was born in 2013.
Robert spent the next eight years enjoying his grandchildren. He especially loved reading books, drawing pictures and playing "Hide Grandpa's Hat". In later years, he would give them rides by pushing them while they rode on his walker. Eventually, the time came when they would push him in his wheel chair.
Robert and Sharon celebrated their 66 th wedding anniversary this past June and Robert's 91st birthday three weeks ago.
He is survived by his wife Sharon, his son Rohn (Elisa), his two grandchildren Caleb and Eli, his sisters Ardis, Delores, and Dorothy and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, William and Donald.
