Obituary

Ruth E. Johnson, 90, Grand Forks, formerly of Fessenden, ND died April 29, 2019 at Parkwood Senior Center in Grand Forks after a short battle with cancer.

Ruth Berg was born November 4, 1928 in Mayville, ND to Gilbert and Clara (Hefta) Berg. She was raised in Mayville and graduated as Salutatorian of Mayville High School in 1946. She graduated from Mayville Teachers College in 1950 with a degree in Education and began her teaching career at Harvey High School. While teaching in Harvey she met Gerald Johnson, who would become her husband on June 22,1952. She then gave up her teaching job because, at that time, married women could not be teachers.

Gerald and Ruth then operated the pharmacy in Fairmount, ND for 2 years before purchasing the pharmacy in Fessenden. They owned and operated Johnson Drug for 35 years. Ruth returned to teaching English, Business and Typing at Fessenden High School in 1965 and retired 24 years later!

She was an accomplished seamstress and could 'fix" everything her family brought to her and could also make anything they needed - including 3 wedding dresses!

She loved her large garden and spent the summers tending it. We especially loved the raspberries and the jelly made from it.

Ruth and Gerald spent the last 25 years in Mesa, Arizona during the winters enjoying the weather. She will be greatly missed by her loving family.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Gerald who passed away in 2014, her parents and brother-in-law Norman Sinclair.

She is survived by her sisters Dorothy (Leonard) Bina and Corrine Sinclair both Grand Forks; her 3 daughters, Jean (Gary Dodd) Demro, Three Rivers, MI, Carol (Mark) Knorr, Velva, ND and Susan (Roger) Hodnefield, Grand Forks; 7 grandchildren, Laura (Kamran) Khaghany, Anna (Luke) Fasoldt, Becky (Mike) Kraszewski, Lisa (Delton) Myers, Brian Knorr, Ethan (Michala) Hodnefield and Lucas Hodnefield; and 5 great grandchildren, Allison and Alexis Khaghany, Emerson and Kendyl Myers and Hudson Hodnefield.
