Shirley Ann Benson, daughter of Leonard and Arlene Benson was born December 20, 1942 at St. Paul, MN where she was raised and educated. As a young woman Shirley remained at home and helped raise her youngest brother.

She was once married to Ivan Arnold. They made their home in the Rush City, MN area where they operated a dairy farm for several years. In 1976 they moved to Fessenden where they continued to raise their five children.

Through the years, Shirley worked for several Fessenden businesses including, the Tastee Freeze, Cabaret, Cenex, MTI Telemarketing, Big A Café and the Fessenden Co-op. She was saddened when her illness forced her to retire because she enjoyed working with the public where she made many friends through the years.

She continued to live at home where she loved gardening, planting her flowers, feeding and watching the birds, and especially taking care of her beloved pugs, Max and Midnight.

Shirley is survived by her five children, Amy (Jacob) Serfontein of Fessenden, Shelly Lanenga (Robert Leintz) of Raleigh, David Arnold of Watford City, Lee Arnold of Fessenden and James Arnold of Bowdon; 3 grandchildren, Cassandra 'Cassie' Volk of Devils Lake, and Amanda & Sierra Lanenga of Bismarck; 2 brothers, Alan (Maryann) Benson of Phoenix, AZ and Robert (Diane) Benson of St. Paul, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Arlene; step-father, Bernard; and nephew, Robbie Benson.

Shirley's family extends a special thank you for the love and care shown to her by the people of Fessenden, the Fessenden Ambulance, her Oncologist, Dr. Rao, the Hospice nurses, the surrounding community and the Arnold relatives for keeping in touch with Shirley in her time of need.
